Materials
Super bulky cotton yarn (3–4 colors: cream, mustard, brown, dark brown)
Crochet hook (8 mm – 10 mm)
Yarn needle
Scissors
Stitch markers (optional)
Abbreviations (US Terms)
ch = chain
sc = single crochet
hdc = half double crochet
dc = double crochet
inc = increase (2 stitches in same stitch)
sl st = slip stitch
Step 1: Start with the Body (Oval Base)
Ch 20
Row 1:
1 sc in 2nd ch from hook
sc across
3 sc in last chain
continue on the other side of chain
sc across, 2 sc in last stitch
Continue working in oval rounds, increasing at the ends:
Round 2–6: keep expanding using inc at curves
This creates the main oval “belly” of the cat.
Step 2: Shape the Body
Switch colors to create the striped effect
Use hdc stitches for a thicker texture

Add color blocks (mustard + brown stripes) on one side of the body
Keep one side mostly cream (like the belly)
Tip: Work in rows (instead of rounds) once the oval is big enough to flatten the shape like in the photo.
Step 3: Head
Attach yarn to the top of the body
Work in rows:
Row 1: hdc across (about 12–16 stitches)
Row 2–5: increase slightly at edges to round the head
Step 4: Ears (Make 2)
Start with magic ring
Work:
ch 1, 3 sc inside ring
turn, inc on both ends → triangle shape
Sew or crochet directly onto head
Step 5: Legs (Make 4)
Attach yarn at bottom sides
Ch 5–7
Work back with hdc or sc
Add slight increases to make paws wider
Step 6: Tail
Attach yarn at lower side
Ch 20–25
Work back with hdc
Alternate colors every few rows for stripes
Step 7: Face Details
Eyes: embroider with black yarn or use safety eyes
Nose: small triangle (pink or brown)
Whiskers: simple straight stitches
Mouth: small curved stitch
Step 8: Final Border
Go around entire piece with single crochet
Add extra stitches in corners to keep shape flat
Customization Ideas
Change colors (gray cat, black cat, etc.)
Make it bigger by adding more base rounds
Add anti-slip backing for floor use
Turn into a wall decoration instead of rug
Final Tip
This pattern is freeform-inspired, so don’t worry about perfection. The charm comes from the handmade look!
